THIS MONTHS QUEEN FEATURE: TIERA MILES~
AROUNDTHEWAY: Tell us a little bit about yourself. Where are you from?TIERA M.
My name is Tiera Miles. I am a
graduate of the University of Texas at Arlington; I have a bachelor’s degree in
Kinesiology with a minor in history. I
am from Arlington, Texas but I grew up in Mansfield. I am a wonderful child of
God. I serve at Rockstar Church as a youth minister and cater to my girls in
Charm School 101 outside of work and church. I absolutely love sports, mostly
basketball, I love kids and drawing is my escape from the world. I also speak
at local schools as a motivational speaker, encouraging teenagers to chase
life; I like to call it TSMILES Inspiring lives.
AROUNDTHEWAY: I met you a few months ago at a conference and you shared with me your plans to start charm school 101 classes. What inspired you?Tiera M.
I worked at a junior high for 5
years; 4 years as a supervisor for the ACE 21st Before and After
school program where I worked with at-risk kids and became very passionate
about helping less fortunate kids be excited about life. During the program we had an activity called
character development where the boys and girls would split up and talk about
“boys stuff” and “girls stuff”. I and a
co-worker of mine decided to start a charm school for our girls because of the
disrespect we were receiving throughout the program from them. During the
process of developing charm school, we found that many of these girls if not
all of them had a self-esteem problem. They lacked self-love, self-confidence,
self-value and were fighting, running away from home and some were even
molested or raped.
I was raped in the 7th
grade by two boys I thought were my friends. I struggled with self-love,
confidence, value, and self-esteem for 12 years, afterwards, because I never
spoke out. As a kid, I cut myself, tried to commit suicide and fed myself any
and every negative thought possible, because I thought it was my fault. In a
lot of ways, I was just like them in junior high school. This is where my pain
became my purpose! In April 2013, the district announced that we would no
longer have the 21st century after school program where kids could
come after school and engage in activities until 7:00pm and have a bus ride
home. We were devastated but there was something that sparked inside of me to
establish a Charm School 101 to implement into the school district. Therefore,
June 28, 2013, I started an all-girls organization called Charm
School 101. I was inspired by my own life to empower girls to become young
women who love themselves and who lead others.
tiera M:
At Charm School 101, I teach young
girls how to love themselves from the inside out. I help them develop confidence in themselves
and how to become the leader of the pack. These ladies will learn how to set goals
and a step by step method on how to reach each goal. They will also learn how pay
it forward to their peers and other people they come in contact with. I also
show these ladies how to encourage themselves and others to keep going along
their journey, no matter how difficult things become, because situations
happen, obstacles come, and there are always distractions. I also show them how the inner beauty of
oneself is the most important attribute to have as a young woman, by showing
them their reflection in the mirror.
AROUNDTHEWAY: Any words of encouragement to someone reading this who may be feeling led to do more for their community or walk in gods purpose for their life and may unsure of where to start and that ugly word f.e.a.r. may be holding them back?
tiera M.
Whatever it is God has put on your
heart to do, whatever purpose He has put in your heart to pursue, JUST DO IT!
Research what it takes to write that book, start that business or organization,
clothing line, whatever it is, DO IT! I remember walking in my purpose not
knowing I was walking in my purpose, at my old church I was trying to find a
way to start an all-girls class talking about dating and how to be Christ-like
while dating. While I was trying to get permission from my pastor, who is now
deceased, he stopped me in my tracks and raised his voice and said, “Tee, whatever
it is you are trying to do, you just gotta do it!” So I pay that forward to you
and anybody else you are connected to, whatever God has for you, is simply just
FOR YOU, so just DO IT! To speak on FEAR, I say this, anything you’re afraid to
do, YOU MUST DO! Get out of your comfort zone and trust God, He’s there every
step of the way. In the Bible it says do
not be afraid or do not fear 365 times, so guess what? Call on the name of
Jesus and remember that you can do ALL things, I repeat ALL THINGS, through
Christ who strengthens you. **Philippians 4:13**
